Once You Take My Case, What Will Happen?

Attorney Thompson will meet with you to go over your case and answer any questions you may have. We will start working on your case immediately--it won't sit around on someone's desk for weeks. Attorney Thompson personally develops an action plan to obtain the information and expert assistance necessary to ensure that you will receive the best possible settlement for your injuries. This action plan includes a thorough investigation of how your accident happened and our client’s injuries and, when necessary, interviews of witnesses and consultations with medical experts about issues such as the nature and severity of your injuries, whether you will have permanent impairment, your future medical needs and lost income, and any work restrictions you may have.

While our investigation is underway, we strive to help our clients get back on their feet. We know that being injured in an accident can cause serious financial difficulties. For that reason, we assist clients in accessing health insurance benefits, medical payments coverage, and pre-settlement loans to help pay bills.

After we've completed our investigation, we begin the negotiation process with the insurance company. You will be fully informed throughout this process. We will advise you whether the amount being offered by an insurance company is fair and reasonable and will explain the basis for our advice. One of the more difficult questions in every case is what the appropriate settlement amount should be. In order to answer this question, we rely on results from our past cases, as well as published settlement and jury verdict data.

We aim to reduce your worries and stress.

We understand the stress that is caused by serious injuries and, for that reason, do everything possible to minimize that stress. We can almost always get the information we need from you over the phone (or by email), reducing the need for you to travel to meet with us in person. After we take your case, we will immediately notify the insurance company that we are representing you and that they will be dealing with us from that point on. Our goal is to let you focus on getting better and to leave the hassle of dealing with the insurance company to us.

Settling your claim is just the beginning...

Many accident victims don't realize that settling a case is only part of the process. It is equally important to reduce liens and unpaid bills to ensure that you receive as much as possible from your settlement. To illustrate: we recently settled a large case for a South Portland police officer. The health insurance lien was over $70,000. We were able to negotiate down that lien to just under $20,000, thereby giving our client an additional $50,000 out of the settlement. While the results of lien negotiations vary from case to case, we have an excellent history of obtaining significant lien reductions for our clients.

If the insurance company won't offer a fair settlement amount, we're ready to fight for you.

Insurance companies know that Attorney Thompson and his legal team are ready and willing to fight it out in court if need be. Our team has an excellent track record of courtroom victories throughout the State. This track record is critically important to ensuring that insurance companies will take your claim seriously. Insurance companies know which law firms shy away from a fight and see that as a sign of weakness and justification to stall and/or reduce the amount they are willing to pay to settle the case.

If you don't receive compensation, you don't pay us anything for our services--it's that simple.

There are no upfront charges for our services. We get paid a percentage of the compensation we collect for you (generally one-third). If we don't collect money for you, then you don't have to pay us for our services.

My brother is an attorney in New York. After my accident 2 years ago I asked him what firm I should go with. He researched and told me to call Peter Thompson and Associates.
