Boat Accident on Flagstaff Lake Claims Two Lives
MAINE – A devastating boating accident on Flagstaff Lake over the weekend left two women from Suffolk County, New York, dead and another critically injured, highlighting the serious dangers of watercraft accidents in Maine’s lakes and rivers.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the upper reaches of Flagstaff Lake, a popular recreation site in western Maine. According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW), seven individuals were riding on a pontoon boat when its bow began to dip below the waterline. Efforts by the operator to raise the bow were unsuccessful, causing the vessel to flip over about 180 feet from the shoreline.
All seven passengers were thrown into the lake. Nearby boaters and people onshore rushed to help bring the victims to safety. CPR was immediately performed on three individuals who were unresponsive after being pulled from the water.
Victims Identified
Authorities confirmed that 23-year-old Kiran Akbar of Lake Grove, New York, and 53-year-old Farhana Nasir of Selden, New York, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, 22-year-old Noor Nasir, was airlifted to a Bangor hospital and remains in critical condition. Four others survived the capsizing with less severe injuries.
Officials reported that none of the boat’s occupants were wearing life jackets at the time of the crash. Preliminary findings indicate that alcohol was not a contributing factor. Investigators are now working to determine the cause of the accident, which may involve mechanical failure, weight distribution, or operator error.
Boating Accidents in Maine
Maine’s lakes and waterways are a central part of summer recreation for both residents and tourists. Unfortunately, boating accidents—particularly those involving pontoon boats—can result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. The U.S. Coast Guard consistently stresses the importance of personal flotation devices (PFDs). Statistics show that in the vast majority of drowning cases linked to boating accidents, victims were not wearing life jackets.
Under Maine law, children under 10 must wear life jackets on most watercraft, but adults are not legally required to do so. While optional, safety officials strongly recommend life jackets for all passengers, regardless of swimming ability. This tragic event underscores how quickly a day of leisure can turn into a life-altering tragedy when safety measures are overlooked.
Legal and Liability Issues in Boating Accidents
When a serious boating accident occurs, questions of liability and compensation quickly follow. Determining responsibility can be complex, often involving multiple factors:
- Boat Operator Responsibility: If negligence, inexperience, or improper operation is found, the operator may be held legally responsible for injuries and wrongful deaths.
- Mechanical Defects: If a mechanical issue or manufacturing defect contributed to the capsizing, the boat’s manufacturer or rental company may face liability.
- Passenger Overloading: Exceeding a boat’s recommended weight capacity can destabilize the vessel, potentially placing legal responsibility on the operator or rental company.
- Failure to Provide Safety Equipment: Rental companies must ensure that boats are properly equipped with U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets and other safety gear.
Victims of boating accidents—or families who lose loved ones—may be entitled to pursue damages for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost income, and emotional suffering.
Maine’s History of Watercraft Accidents
Sadly, this is not the first serious boating accident in Maine. Each summer, the state sees dozens of incidents ranging from minor collisions to fatal drownings. Flagstaff Lake itself, with its remote coves and sometimes unpredictable conditions, requires careful navigation. The Maine Warden Service and other agencies frequently remind boaters of the importance of proper training, adherence to safety regulations, and the use of protective gear.

- Avoiding alcohol use while operating a watercraft.
